West Coast and Cederberg Route
Welcome to the West Coast — a rugged, sun-drenched stretch of South Africa where the cold Atlantic meets fiery sunsets, and every stop tells a story. Crayfish, rock art, rooibos tea, wildflowers, wine, beer, olives, and citrus orchards are only some of many highlights.
Hit the road from Cape Town along the scenic R27, and the adventure begins. From August to September, this arid land explodes in colour as carpets of wildflowers transform the landscape into a living painting. Take the turn on the R315 to the charming town of Darling — home to the iconic Darling Brewery, the unique West Coast Smoke House, and tastings of awarded wines, traditional toffees, and rusks at Darling Sweet and jam and infused oils at Darling Olives.
Back on the R27, head north to the West Coast National Park, where flamingos, pelicans, and up to 50,000 migratory birds grace the skies in summer. Here lies 40% of the world’s remaining sandveld fynbos — a treasure trove of biodiversity and a wildflower spectacle not to be missed.
Follow the road to Langebaan, then beyond Velddrif to the beloved fishing village of Paternoster. It’s all whitewashed cottages, local art, fresh seafood, and the serene rhythm of coastal life. Visit the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve, explore hidden bays, and enjoy the marina market’s delights. Don’t miss the old marina with its quirky shops, arty galleries, and superb restaurants.
Continue your journey north on the R399. At Elands Bay, turn inland toward Clanwilliam, nestled at the foot of the Cederberg Mountains — heartland of Rooibos tea. Cross the dramatic Pakhuis Pass, visit the ancient Sevilla San Rock Art sites, and lose yourself in landscapes sculpted by time and wind.
Back on N7 drive through citrus groves towards Citrusdal, then wind over the R303 through the rugged Cederberg ridges, reach Ceres and continue on the R46 to the valley jewel of Tulbagh — a Cape Dutch town rich in history and wine, cradled by the Witzenberg Mountains.
And from here? The road opens to even more discoveries along the Cape Country Routes — a journey of nature, culture, and taste that doesn’t just take you places, it brings you alive.
