Route 62 is modeled after the iconic Route 66 in the US, made famous by the King Cole Trio, headed of course by the late, great Nat King Cole.

Being one of the favoured routes in the unique offerings of Cape Country Routes, this well-maintained blacktop highway offers a charming and adventurous alternative to the mundane N2. It meanders from Worcester, by way of the Breede River Valley, through Robertson, Ashton and Montagu, then the Klein Karoo landmark towns and then on to George and the Garden Route.

This back road beauty eases past 14 beautiful well-looked-after towns where one would not be remiss if assumed that the clock stopped here some 40 years ago. Experience a scenic drive between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, and from the Langkloof to Port Elizabeth. Although the route itself is shorter than the N2 highway, the pace is relaxed, and most people take the opportunity to enjoy exploring the interesting towns en route.

At Cape Country Routes we maintain that based at any one of our benchmarked accommodation establishments at any of the Route 62 travel destinations you can venture into the surrounding landscape of mountains and valleys, discovering places of interest so often missed on more hurried travels.Route_62_Pano

Take for instance The Montague Country Hotel, a setting of old world elegance and space. Fondly referred to as “the only original Art Deco hotel in South Africa”, bedrooms are decorated in either Art Deco or Victorian style and offer a bygone charm. it further boasts Conference and Wedding facilities which speak of understated luxury and offer packages tailor-made to taste and budget

If Oudshoorn and the Small Karoo are more your speed, then De Zeekoe Guest Farm is just the medicine. Twenty-odd stylish rooms open onto cool verandas set in a lush indigenous garden. A further four secluded, duly equipped log cabins offer breath-taking views across the De Zeekoe Lake and surrounding mountains. Meticulous attention is given and all whims are catered for.

Cape Country Routes are ashamed to admit that we harbor a favourite in the family. Our wish is that you’d consider meeting this gem sooner rather tan later…
